In the UK today, many thousands of young people aged between 16-24 years old are leading difficult, isolated and troubled lives. With around one in ten people within this category self-harming regularly and nearly 80,000 diagnosed with severe depression, the necessity of tackling and breaking the stigma is vital in tackling this serious problem.

During this very complex life stage, students have also have to face concerns such as:
  • More competition for university places with rising exams grades.
  • More debt than ever before amidst a declining market in graduate level positions.
  • 24 hour social networking increasing the risk of bullying.
  • Isolation from family and friend.
  • Social pressures to have access to money, the perfect body and the latest gadgets.

If left unchecked, ignoring student mental health can lead to: higher drop-out rates, declining exam results, damage to the university's REF rating and reputation and declining intake figures.

This course for student mental health, helps to tackle this issue by empowering students to identify if they may be suffering with a mental health issue such as depression or self-harm, and more importantly, show them how to seek help and ways in which the university can help.
